I think it's unusual (and possibly a mistake) to date a death certificate for brain death when the heart is still beating. I hope that in the brief time you and the children had with him in the hospital, that you could feel his spirit was alive and well - and that he'll be waiting for you. Thanks for your work with hospice and nursing!Jim deMaine, MDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15305598245850297381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173095375385680490.post-92109558444177961232011-03-27T14:16:33.416-07:002011-03-27T14:16:33.416-07:00Dr. deMaine: I lost my husband in 2005 from a suba...Dr. deMaine: I lost my husband in 2005 from a subarachnoid hemmorhage in the brain stem. He was 44. Thank you for your post...

He died on September 11, 2005, but his death certificate read September 10, because he was declared brain dead upon arrival to the hospital. Our children were not there until the last 24 hours...and when they saw this, they felt robbed...as if their time with their father didn't matter. I always wondered why they didn't make the date and time of death the day he was removed from life support. Had he fallen that day...they would have.
I am a nurse and Hospice Director... I appreciate your sensitivity to end-of-life care; the needs of both the patient and the ones they love.
DonnaDonnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15905852222655600261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173095375385680490.post-90247679321576123252010-12-24T20:31:29.548-08:002010-12-24T20:31:29.548-08:00Dr. deMaine: We read this on Christmas eve and we...Dr. deMaine: We read this on Christmas eve and were moved by your care and attention to your patients.
